I've got the low-down, got the lowest of the low-down blues this very evening.
Oh it feels, feels like my crown is sinkin' right on through through my shoes.
My family didn't have cable coming up, but we did have PBS.
I was watching it until I was in high school.
I saw all the shows and PBS does a really good job of welcoming a whole bunch of people in with wholesome content.

This kid that lived in a small town in Florida who never got a chance to go to Broadway, got to see some Broadway.
And so PBS is just definitely important.
♪ I got love I got love I got love, love, love, Oh, I got love I knew Broadway was a thing and it existed, but I didn't think there was a place for me there until I saw Nell Carter in Ain't Misbehavin.
And I got a hunger for it.
And it was because of PBS.

When I think about what black people have contributed to the theater because, you know, it's called the Great White Way.
But I'm proud of what we've done.
We've made our mark on Broadway and we can't be denied.

The musical magic continues next with Nova Payton's magnificent performance of I'm Here Yes, it's from the Broadway hit The Color Purple, sung by Lachanze in the original production.
Her stage name means the charmed one in Creole, justified when she earned a well-deserved Tony Award for her performance.
The songs in these performances are a great reminder of the mark made on the Great White Way by Black entertainers since the 1920s.
