Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipGUEST: This was a gift to me several decades ago... GUEST: ...from an old beau.
Our relationship didn't last, and I got to keep the bag.
It was a lovely gift-- I have used it on occasion.
I do think it's Tiffany... APPRAISER: Mm-hmm.
GUEST: But I, I'm not sure.
APPRAISER: Okay, well, your bag is Tiffany-- it's marked on the inside-- and it's circa 1910, maybe 1915, and it is gold and platinum.
The lighter-color stripes are platinum... GUEST: Wow!
APPRAISER: ...there's a lot of beautiful, chased work on the frame, and in the center, you have a group of demantoid garnets and diamonds.
Inside, there's a small chain-- at one point, the bag had a little change purse that was attached, but that's missing now.
The chain handle is also gold.
GUEST: Wow.
APPRAISER: The retail value on this beautiful bag would be between $20,000 and $22,000.
GUEST: No way.
APPRAISER: Way.
GUEST: Oh, my God!
APPRAISER: (laughing) GUEST: I had estimated maybe $3,500 just because of the gold.
APPRAISER: Uh-huh.
GUEST: And the, uh, cost of gold today.
APPRAISER: Yep.
GUEST: But I had no idea.
APPRAISER: Yeah, it's over eight ounces of gold.
GUEST: Wow.
APPRAISER: If it were to be melted, scrapped, it would still be worth $19,000, um, gold weight.
GUEST: In, just in gold.
APPRAISER: Yeah.
It's not a very popular style anymore, so it's not a quick seller.
Otherwise, there would be more of a difference between the gold value and the retail value.
GUEST: Thank you.
APPRAISER: You're welcome.
Thank you.
GUEST: Yay!
APPRAISER: It's a beautiful bag.
GUEST: It really is.
APPRAISER: It is.
GUEST: And I've enjoyed it... APPRAISER: Yeah.
GUEST: ...when I've taken it fancy places.
